In Book 4 of The Lord of The Rings by J.R. Tolkien, the idea of the corruption of human evil is presented throughout Chapter 3, which is also shown in Book 4 Chapter 1 of The Gulag Archipelago by Vintage Solzhenitsyn. In The Lord of the Rings, Sam and Frodo and the rest of the group enter Mordor, which immediately gives them a bad feeling and a sense of evil throughout the environment. This is displayed when Tolkien writes, “‘More Men going to Mordor,’ he said in a low voice. ‘Dark faces. We have not seen Men like these before, no, Smeagol has not. They are fierce. They have black eyes, and long black hair, and gold rings in their ears; yes, lots of beautiful gold’”, which he then goes on to write, “‘Not nice; very cruel wicked Men they look. Almost as bad as Orcs, and much bigger’” (Tolkien 646). Here, it is clear that once the group entered Mordor, a feeling of evil came upon them due to the Men and how disturbing and frightening they were. This scene suggests how good can be corrupted by evil. Similarly, in The Gulag Archipelago, Chapter 1 of Book 4 discusses the aspect of power and evil corrupting good and controlling  everyone else. As Solzhenistyn discusses his own personal experience with the corruptness and awful ways of the Soviet leaders, he also mentions this pattern and how it is a common thing in history. This is shown when he writes, “And then- from all kinds of socialists, and most of all from the most modern, infallible, and intolerant Teaching, which consists of this one thing only: The result is what counts! It is important to forge a fighting Party! And to seize power! And to hold power! And to remove all enemies!” (Solzhenistyn 307). This quote demonstrates the ways that the Soviets thought, specifically Stalin, as well as other dictators/people in control of others throughout history. It is evident that human evil was surrounded by Solzhenistyn as he was in the presence of these Soviet leaders, and the ways of their Totalitarian regime caused corruption. Overall, human evil corrupting good is demonstrated in these books.
