Hi everyone! My name is Sydney Duncan and I’m going to be talking about a specific point that C.S. Lewis discusses in Chapter 1 of The Abolition Of Man. In “Men Without Chests”, Lewis implies that authors of English textbooks essentially try to invalidate the values and emotions of students, which is significant because it displays an aspect of the education system and the issues that Lewis noticed. A specific quote that I found to be compelling is shown when Lewis expresses, “The very power of Gaius and Tiitius depends on the fact that they are dealing with a boy: a boy who thinks he is ‘doing’ his ‘English Prep’ and has no notion that ethics, theology, and politics are all at stake” (Lewis 5). This describes how Lewis views these authors that he calls “Gaius and Titius” to be very manipulative as they wrote their English textbooks, saying whatever they wanted and teaching children that their emotions are unimportant and invaluable. Through this, Lewis suggests that the education system is corrupt and that students have no idea what to listen to and what not to listen to. Lewis also mentions the Tao, which he believes is a set of beliefs that values emotions and sentiments. Therefore, the textbook writers do not follow the Tao, and frankly follow the opposite of it, as they teach students that sentiments and emotions are things to be ignored and non-rational.
