The idea of power and going against who rules is shown in Chapter 6 of Hideous Strength  by C.S. Lewis. At the beginning of the chapter, Wither is speaking to Mr. Studdock about being mindful and careful when dealing with The Institute. This idea of the danger of higher powers relates to a point in The Age of Surveillance Capitalism  by Shoshana Zuboff, in which she compares owners of Google to robber barons in the 19th century. Overall, these points in both books portray the secrecy and danger of high power companies or governments. Specifically, C.S. Lewis shows this when Witter says to Mr. Studdock, “I am thinking throughout your own interests-quite equally disastrous if you allowed yourself ever to be distracted from your real work by unauthorised collaboration- or worse still, interference- with the work of other members. Do not let causal suggestions distract you or dissipate your energies” (117). This quote is interesting because Witter is attempting to explain to Mr. Studdock why he must be careful with what he does while working for the Institution, and to not go against them. On the other hand, Zuboff points out exactly what Witter is saying not to do when she discusses the robber barons when she writes, “Their industries were to be ‘self-regulating’: free to follow their own evolutionary laws”, and then continues to say, “In our discussion of ‘fortifications’ we’ll see that Google revived all of these strategies and more” (107). Through this quote, Zuboff essentially criticizes the robber barons for their corrupt and manipulating techniques and also compares them to Google. This chapter describes how Google is a company that created something so powerful that it went against the higher power, such as the government. Zuboff criticizes Google and  capitalism in general, which relates to the point Witter makes in Hideous Strength about how one must not go against a higher power in order to create an “unauthorized collaboration”, which is exactly what Google is explained as.
